FAQ
When is the game coming out?
HexCrawl is currently in active development. I don’t have a firm release date yet, but you can follow progress on the Dev Blog and I’ll announce when it’s ready.
Is it free to play?
HexCrawl will be free to play. I plan to offer optional cosmetic items and content unlocks for players who want to support the game.
What platforms will it be on?
HexCrawl runs in the browser — no download required. While I’m focused on desktop for now, the UI does fit reasonably well on mobile browsers and I may consider creating a bespoke app in the future.
Do I need an account to play?
Nope! You can jump in as a guest. Creating an account (via Discord or Google) lets you save your progress across sessions.
How does the game work?
You create a character who persists across many adventures. Each adventure drops them into a procedurally generated hex map shaped by their personal goals and history — the world you explore reflects who your character is and what they’re after. Travel across the map, fight monsters in turn-based combat, manage resources like food and gold, and try to complete your quest. When the adventure ends, your character lives on to embark on the next one.
Do you use AI?
Yes, and I want to be upfront about how and why. I know AI is a polarizing topic, and I think that’s fair — it’s been misused in a lot of places. My goal is to use it only where it genuinely enhances and expands the game in ways that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.
In HexCrawl, AI works in light touches behind the scenes to shape the content of your adventures. It reads your character’s personal goals and history and uses that to influence the world you explore — the encounters you stumble into, the flavor of the stories you experience, the way the world seems to know who you are. The result is that every adventure feels personal, and your choices and actions carry real weight in the ongoing story of your character.
I’m not using AI to replace artistry or cut corners. I’m using it to make the game more alive.
I found a bug. How do I report it?
Please email support@hexcrawl.online with a description of what happened. Screenshots are helpful if you can grab one!
